October Home Checklist

October Home Checklist

We love October. The leaves are changing colours, scarves and boots are peppering the sidewalks, and the morning air has a hint of crispness that makes you want to stay under the covers just a few minutes longer. Enjoy your home to the fullest this fall by checking these October to-dos off your list.

Rake leaves

It’s that time of year again. If your yard is surrounded by trees, you’ll be busy this month. Choose a rake with a comfortable grip that suits your height.

Tip: As an alternative, leaves are wonderful nutrients for your lawn. Instead of raking, mulch the leaves with your lawn mower and watch nature do its thing.

Trim dead tree limbs

All it takes is a strong gust of wind or a thick layer of ice for dead tree limbs to become hazardous during winter storms. If too close to the sides of a home and roof, they can also ruin your exterior. Remove any dead tree limbs to avoid costly repairs in the future. Hire a professional for those hard to reach areas.

Clean gutters and downspouts

Remove any fallen leaves from gutters and downspouts. Flush the area with water and ensure all joints and brackets are firmly secured. Replace damaged gutters to ensure water can flow freely and properly.

Check your fireplace

Make sure your wood-burning fireplace is in good working order and ready to go for the first fire of the season. Book a professional chimney clean and stock up on firewood.

Protect outdoor furniture and grills

If outdoor furniture and cookware will be left outside throughout fall and winter, make sure it is properly protected with outdoor coverings to avoid damage from sleet and snow. If you plan on using your grill throughout the year, make sure to keep it covered when not in use.

Shut off exterior faucets and store hoses

Disconnect and drain hoses before storing them away for the winter months. Shut off the water supply to exterior faucets to prevent frozen pipes.

Caulk cracks and gaps in siding

As the temperature begins to drop, even the smallest cracks and gaps can have an impact on your heating bill. Check around windows, doors and vents for any openings. Dealing with this now could save you money later.

Let there be light
Natural light becomes more of a luxury as we approach the cooler months. Amp up a dark space with industrial lamps, dramatic chandeliers or simple track or pot lighting.

Fresh décor for fall
A pumpkin here and a wool throw there will cozy up any space in your home. Rich tones and layers provide a sense of warmth to a drab space.
