Ten Tips to Brighten Your Home

Ten Tips to Brighten Your Home

Despite the recent snowfall, we’re setting our sights on brighter and warmer days. To get you in the spring spirit, we’ve compiled a list of 10 simple and effective ways to brighten up your home’s interior.

Light furniture.
Too many dark accents can make a room feel small and closed in. Select light-coloured couches, tables, and bookshelves to brighten a drab space. Too much furniture and “stuff” will make a room feel crowded and closed in. Removing some of the clutter will instantly brighten a space.

Paint.
This is probably the most obvious suggestion, but it’s truly amazing to see what lighter paint colours can do for a dark space. Soft, airy hues in whites, blues, greens and greys breathe new life into a dated space. Painting a ceiling or ceiling beams white will instantly brighten a space.

Don’t block windows.
Your windows are there to provide natural light. Tall items in front of windows, such as bookcases and large plants, block sunlight. Move larger items away from windows to soak up as much sunshine as possible.

Light curtains.
Draperies created with heavy materials add weight to a space.  Select sheer curtains for a fresh and light feel.

Mirrors.
Mirrors reflect light. For optimal results, place mirrors across from light sources, such as windows. Mirrors also assist in making a space feel larger, so the benefits are great!

Clean.
‘Tis the season for a little spring cleaning! If it’s been awhile since you gave your home a good dusting and scrub down, then now’s the time to get your abode in tip-top shape. Clean all light fixtures, such as sconces and chandeliers, to remove dusty and dirty layers that may be blocking light.

Switch out lightbulbs.
If you’re currently using dingy yellow-tinted lightbulbs, swap them out for bright white LED bulbs. Not only do they provide more light, they’re also more energy-efficient!

Add flowers and plants.
Bring a little bit of the outdoors in with fresh cut flowers and plants. Beautiful blooms and greenery are always a bright spot in any space. As an added bonus, certain plants will assist in purifying your home’s air.

Give floors a facelift.
Dark floors may also be the cause of lack of light. If you don’t want to do a complete overhaul and remove your current floor, consider adding a lighter-hued area rug. This light accent will make a big difference.

Swap a solid door for a glass door.
To increase natural light, swap a solid door for a glass door. Compared to solid doors, glass doors make a room feel larger and more open.
