August Home Checklist

It’s hard to believe we’re already sharing our August home checklist! As we soak up this last month of summer, we’re staying ahead of the game and taking care of those tasks that will ensure a smooth transition into a new season. From back-to-school basics to fun in the summer sun, check out this month’s top to-dos.

Back to school basics.

Make sure your home is ready for back to school season. The key to a successful transition is to plan ahead. Create a designated area in your home that is quiet and organized for homework and reading. Prepare the “drop zone” for backpacks, shoes and jackets with hooks, baskets and cubbies. Taking care of this now will avoid total chaos and clutter later.

Clean and organize garage.

Your garage or shed has no doubt been a central storage location for gardening tools, lawn equipment and summer sports equipment. Spend some time going through the space and remove any unused or damaged items that will merely collect dust throughout the year. Add hooks and racks for added storage.
Tip: The ceiling in your garage can be prime storage space with a few shelves or added beams.

Meal plan.

Life tends to speed up post-summer. Stay ahead of the game with a full-blown meal plan. Knowing what you’ll make days in advance is not only efficient, but also cost-effective when re-purposing ingredients from previous nights.

Give floors a good clean.

Floors can take quite a beating no matter the season. Days spent at the beach or afternoons lakeside usually means you’re tracking sand and dirt throughout your home upon your return. Ensure you’re using the correct cleaning solution for each surface in your home.

Inspect and store summer gear.

We’re not saying to stash the surf board right away, but start inspecting your summer gear and take care of any repairs before storing them away. Have a designated area for those summer-only items to avoid sending out the search party when summer 2018 rolls around.

Clean bathroom fan.

With summer humidity in the air, a bathroom fan has to work even harder to clear air following a shower. Remove the plate and clean any mildew and dust that may have built up over the last few months. A good clean will ensure the fan is working at maximum capacity.

Soak up the final days of summer.

This is an easy one! Take advantage of the sunny season and enjoy August to the fullest. Halifax is bursting with fun summer-end activities the whole family can enjoy. So get out there and soak up the summer sunshine!
