Create the Ultimate Home Office

Check out our top tips for creating the ideal home office.

Location.

Location. Location. Location. A workspace smack dab in the middle of your home’s hustle and bustle is not ideal, especially if clients will be stopping by. That being said, if this isn’t the meeting place for clients and you work well with slight distractions, you may not want to distance yourself too far from your home’s day-to-day activities. A tiny nook that barely gives you enough space for a desk and chair is also on the don’t list. For maximum productivity, your home office should be located in a quiet and spacious space.

Practical and functional.

Think about what you do on a daily basis. What items should be at your fingertips? How should storage be arranged to ensure easy access to files and stationery? While we’re all for stylish furniture and sleek office tools, a home office needs to find that perfect balance between fabulous yet functional. Don’t purchase any new pieces before having a layout in place. Once you have a plan, you can find pieces that work best for your unique space.

Don’t be afraid of colour.

We don’t know about you, but a pop of colour in any space makes us smile. Forget about the dull, beige cubicle that dominates many office spaces and select colours that make you excited to sit in that space every day. Whether you’re into a bright and cheery colour palate or something soft and serene that adds a sense of calm, select those shades that best work for you and your home office.

Room with a view.

Depending on your location, your home office may not come equipped with a window streaming in natural light throughout the day. If this is the case, go on the hunt for a few beautiful pieces of art to hang on the walls. After sitting in the same space for hours on end, you’ll appreciate that pop of pretty on the wall. If you do have the luxury of a window view, position your desk and chair towards or near the outdoor light. The sun streaming through may give you that extra shot of energy to pick up the productivity.

Smart storage solutions.

Most home offices don’t come with a ton of square footage, so you may need to get creative when it comes to storage. If you’re using a spare bedroom, a closet is an excellent tool for storage. A few added shelves, baskets and bins becomes an organizer’s dream in a home office custom closet. Floating shelves are a quick addition which take up zero floor space. Wooden crates and woven baskets are stylish additions that double as storage for odds and ends. Think outside the box when planning how to best use the space.

Lighting is key.

Whether you’re staring at a laptop or browsing through printed files, proper lighting is key to ensure you’re not straining your eyes and bringing on unwanted headaches. A substantial overhead light along with a desk lamp will ensure proper lighting throughout the day and night.

Get creative with your space. Have fun selecting unique pieces and colours that make you want to put in those extra hours. With a little TLC, you’ll love where you work in no time!
