June Home Checklist

June Home Checklist

During the month of June, we say goodbye to another school year and hello to fun in the sun. Make sure your home is ready for the upcoming summer season with this month’s home checklist.

Clean grill grates.

Barbecue season is upon us! For those who don’t grill year-round, make sure your grates are clean before the first cookout of the summer season. Select a grill cleaner, use ammonia or vinegar to remove grease and residue. If using ammonia, wear rubber gloves and avoid getting the solution on your skin or in your eyes.

Remove mold and mildew.

Mold and mildew can build up on the outside of your home and the longer you leave it, the tougher it will be to remove. Be proactive and ensure trees and shrubs are pruned back and away from your home. If using bleach for a thorough clean, wear protective clothing, rubber gloves and goggles. And keep in mind that bleach can damage grass, plants and shrubs.

Check and adjust lawn sprinklers.

Before switching on your sprinklers to water your yard, check each sprinkler and remove any grass and debris that has grown over the sprinkler head. Once switched on, ensure there are no underground leaks in the irrigation pipes.

Paint home’s exterior.

Summer is the perfect time to give your home’s exterior a fresh coat of paint. Whether you’re sticking with the same shade or trying something completely different, a warm, dry day is perfect painting weather.

De-clutter mudroom.

Another school year is almost in the books and summer odds and ends will quickly be filling your home. Make room for summer fun by switching out the toques, scarves and backpacks for beach towels, flip flops and sun hats.

Repair fence and garden structures.

Inspect fences, gates, pergolas and other garden structures and take care of any chips or repairs needed. Apply a fresh coat of paint or sealant to fences, gates and pergolas for an easy summer refresh.

Purge kitchen cupboards and fridge.

Summer menus tend to be lighter than winter offerings. Purge your cupboards and refrigerator and remove any items past their prime or those things you know you won’t be indulging in in the next few months. If unopened, bring goodies to your local food bank. Your donation will go a long way.

Put in screen doors.

Install screens to windows and doors if mosquitoes and flies are an issue.

Lighten home décor.

Welcome the upcoming summer season by giving your home’s décor a fresh shot of colour. Select light and airy hues for throws, cushions and rugs for a quick room revamp.
